General description of the collection: The Karl Bretzfelder papers include Bretzfelder's diary, April 6, 1917-July 25, 1919. Journal entries begin in detail when he was called to active duty (June 6, 1918) and continue until he was mustered out of service (July 25, 1919). They offer much insight into his personal and official activities primarily while in France, also briefly while in the United States, Great Britain, and while crossing the ocean. A few miscellaneous papers are also available. While serving with the 48th in France, Bretzfelder persuaded several patients in his ward to write recollections of their military service; a volume containing fourteen of these reminiscences is on hand. Most of these men entered service during WWI, but a few served on the Mexican Border in 1916, and they touch upon their service there, too. These men belonged to the aforementioned military units.
